Microsoft takes notice as free Google Docs gains in popularity

Some big companies are starting to move their spreadsheets, word-processing and other productivity programs off of PCs and on to the Web.

About 20% of respondents to a study by researcher IDC say Google’s Google Docs offering is widely used in their organization, up from 5.8% a little more than a year and a half ago.

This good news for Google has not gone unnoticed at Microsoft. The software giant last week said Office Web Apps — lightweight versions of Office programs delivered through the browser — will enter a limited technical preview. Invited participants will test Word Web App, Excel Web App, PowerPoint Web App and OneNote Web App through Windows Live.

The holiday and the warm temperatures that accompanied it sent droves of people to pools and lakes at two state parks not far from Hazleton.

By 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the temperature in Hazleton reached 92 degrees and at Beltzville State Park, just outside of Lehighton in Franklin Township, a deluge of vehicles and people smothered the state park entrance road on Pohopoco Road where the temperature read 96 degrees.

Vehicles crept along the asphalt and parked on the side of the road waiting anxiously to get inside the park and take advantage of the 949-acre Beltzville Lake. Wearing swim suits and carrying beach towels, beach bags and wheeling charcoal grills, people abandoned their vehicles on the side of the road and walked to the lake entrance.

But getting inside the state park wasn’t an easy task.

Park staff had lake parking closed due to the overabundance of people during one of the park’s busiest days of the year.

Park Manager Kevin Blair and other state park staff, were joined by Franklin Township police and state police, directing traffic as the hot sun beat down on them in their uniforms. As 20 people would leave the lake, park staff would let 20 people waiting inside.

Those that ditched their cars on the side of the road ran the risk of it not being there when they decided to leave. State police said 10 tow trucks were pulling vehicles from the roadside and bringing them to impound lots. The roadside parked vehicles, police said, were blocking the only route an emergency vehicle could take to get to the lake in the heavy traffic.

Blair said the amount of people at the park Sunday was normal for a hot, summer holiday. He was unsure how busy the rest of the week would be as the temperature continues to climb.

Cars were already waiting for their chance to get in the park at 8:45 a.m., Blair said, and traffic didn’t let up by 5 p.m.

“We’ve been this way all day,” he said.

Blair said the state park tried to alleviate congestion by posting the park was closed on a Pennsylvania Turnpike message board and by releasing the information to local media.

At 5 p.m. Vinnie Son, of Philadelphia said, he was waiting to get into Beltzville since 9 a.m. He and his family planned to wait until they got their chance to get in the park.

A heatwave that began Fourth of July weekend will continue to blast the area in the coming days.

Alan Reppert, senior meteorologist at Accuweather, said temperatures will be above normal for the entire work week, reaching 97 degrees by Wednesday. Humidity, he said, will also increase throughout the week before temperatures begin to cool off by Saturday.

He said the heatwave is a result of a very strong high-pressure system carrying with it warm temperatures from the south.

Reppert said people should try to stay inside as much as possible, especially when the sun is the strongest between 10 a.m

“At a time when purchasing a new home has become increasingly harder for low-income families, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a beautiful townhouse rather than keep paying hard-earned money for rent,” Auchter notes.

It could have been thought of by a group of high school students as a homework exercise in strategy for their economics subject. It is not what we would expect from experienced senior leaders of an organisation. The statements of the third type are generally indistinguishable from one organisation to another in different industries and in no way indicate how an organisation may build a competitive edge.

If one asks how people in an organisation defines simple words like

“best”

or

“customer focused”

or even

“customer”

the responses vary markedly. Thus a vision statement worded as above will have significantly different meanings to people in the organisation. Clearly this was not the intention of a vision statement, but it is often the reality.

The second type tends be of a form such as:

“We will be recognised in the (industry/market) as the leader in our (preferred segments/target markets) whilst ensuring the appropriate standards of (safety/environmental protection/corporate governance) are maintained, leveraging our (brand value/consumer reputation) thereby delivering (customer value/shareholder value) and building our future (profits/sales).

There is only one comment required of the second type of vision statement, “What the!” The statements of this type, and they do exist; mean nothing because they attempt to mean everything from a vision to a set of goals to a strategy and some tactics.

The first type of statement takes the minimalist approach of finding some words convey the one thing that employees should not forget that the organisation is trying to achieve.

Obviously, you must use common sense in an emergency, and follow any medical regime outlined for the child. This technique should be learned by the child in a non-emergency, and be used at the first sign of any problems, to totally avoid the emergency situation.

In a large number of my personal cases, all that was required is an explanation to the child of the cause of the problem, a short practice on what to do if their throat gets ‘tickley’, and the general strict instructions to ‘Keep your mouth closed’ and ‘Dont Cough’. [Unless they are choking.]

This one session is often sufficient to stop all symptoms of asthma.

We use hovering technology that they use at Boeing to lift hundred thousand pound fuselages to lover it onto the barge in one piece. We use a section of the bridge which is not too far off the ground as it slopes upward, thus allowing us to float under it barely as we cut the column which is on the high side of the slope. Then we cut the support piece and lay the freeway section onto the barge at a forty-five degree angle across the barge, by situating the barge underneath at that angle.

When dumping it off the side, we can push one end off and anchor the barge so it will not move and push off the other side or sink the barge slowing as needed once anchored, think on this.

You bet it did, another failure of the agency, an agency in my professional reality based observations and opinion.
